Knowing about the south gave Welty the ability to let her stories become filled with subject of the south. Many of Welty’s stories take place in small southern towns. For example, Welty’s The Ponder Heart takes place in the small town of Clay, Mississippi. Losing Battles is set in the home of a woman in Banner, Mississippi. Without Eudora Welty’s knowledge of the south, her stories would not be what they are today. What sets Welty apart from other southern writers is that she gives the reader a small piece of the southern surroundings and in such a way that it lets the reader paint a mental picture of the south in their mind. Eudora Welty knows about the southern life. She has witnessed the southern life first hand because she has lived it. So it is no surprise that Welty’s stories are about how life is in the south.
