Ethan decides to leave Zeena the farm and let her sell the farm. The only problem was whit this was that no would want to buy the degraded farm because of it terrible conditions. This was another set back for Ethan due to the economical force. In the other hand Mattie had the same tragic problem. Her father died with a debt in his financial life. To repay the debt her father build up she started working for the Frome’s for free. She never got to get out of the gloomy town of Starkfield. Both Ethan and Mattie suffered trough the economical force of naturalism. Both Ethan and Mattie go trough social tragedies in the dead town of Starkfield. Ethan and his Puritan teaching and beliefs make him suffer more than help him in life. When his father dies so leaves all he is doing and took care of everything his father left behind. After the death of Ethan’s mother, Ethan decides to marry Zeena. He marries her not because of love but to repay her for her services. Ethan could have left Zeena and Starkfield and moved out somewhere else, but his Puritan beliefs, and his sense of honor and duty tells him to marry Zeena. When Ethan and Mattie decide to kill themselves, Ethan decides to lets not to steer and let faith decide what is going to happen to him. He does this because it is against Puritan beliefs to take your own life. In the case of Mattie the Social force deals with the society itself. Zeena hears people in the community talking about Ethan and Mattie. This conversation leads Zeena to kick Mattie out of her house. If it wasn’t for the social force of naturalism, the novel wouldn’t have ended as it did. Nature, in the force of naturalism plays a major part in how the novel turns out in the end.
