Furthermore, many slaves were now being imported from Africa, making the tobacco trade even more profitable. Another colony that was developing was Maryland, which was known as a gathering place for Catholics. It also prospered from tobacco and slaves, and most importantly, it practiced religious toleration. The Puritans, who were a religious group seeking spiritual asylum, fled to the New World trying to separate them from the Church of England. These pilgrims were somewhat successful, for they were able to develop a fairly complex township. However, many people did not agree with the ideas of the Puritans, and therefore left the group to form colonies of their own. Catholics, as well as dissenting Protestants, such as the Puritans and Quakers, suffered discrimination and sometimes persecution. To gain religious freedom, many English migrated to the New World. English people began moving to the New World, England began to draw in the reigns on the colonies, first by making them all royal colonies and then by limiting trade. The colonies, which were used to freedom, rebelled and for a short time gained back their independence. Then the English came back and reestablished their power.
