...oked at as a weak person. He was humiliated by the other inmates because of his weakness and being new to Shawshank his fear represented this metaphor. The metaphor Virtue applied to the main character Andy Dufrane in Shawshank Redemption. Andy had four different aspects to this metaphor. He had bravery, courage, temperance, and generosity. From working his way up the chain in jobs and being able to break out of Shawshank took all of these virtues. Value is another metaphor that applied to Andy. He is considered to have value because he allowed himself to pursue and cultivate his most admirable traits of banking and craftsmanship. Then he used these traits to help him break out and save his life by doing it. The next metaphor is Community. The Shawshawnk Redemption prison is considered to be a community. This private community is excluded from society and had its own people in it that were prisoners and guards. Diseases or taxation were also present metaphors in the movie. Andy conducting and deducting expenses from the guards tax forms enabled for the disease of corruption and manipulation. During this point Andy was able to earn the trust of the Prison head officials and work on his way to exile. The next metaphor is called House of Cards. The house of cards consisted of the ward and the prison’s guards in the highest level of power controlling the prison and its rules. Once the prison officials were caught and arrested, the house of cards crumbled and the corruption was no longer practiced by them. Realistic Hope is the next metaphor. Red represented this because his hopes and dreams of getting out of prison and living a normal life were a constant concern. Anticipating that other inmates felt the same way, Red was shown by the movie narrator to have this hope more because of all the appeals he had. The reality did not come true until the very end when he then had finally lost it and didn’t care. Praxis or “Theory informed action,” is the next metaphor and is represented by Red. His thinking on Andy and brooks displayed this metaphor. He understood why each men acted the way they did and had a sense of what was going on around them. The next metaphor is an important one in the movie. Happiness is a metaphor that every person seeks to obtain in their life. Andy knew happiness from doing what he liked to do best; such as polishing rocks, playing chess, building a library. Andy displayed this the best because he kept it inside of him away from any guard or prison officials reach. Pleasure is a present metaphor in the movie Shawshank Redemption. Andy Dufrane had a pleasure in listening to fine classical music. This music allowed him to escape from his correctional surroundings. He was instilled with this metaphor by the fact that he could hold this pleasure underneath and keep it to himself similar to happiness. Anachronism is the next metaphor I linked to the movie. Brooks was the best example of this because he felt he was out of his time whenever he got out of prison. Being in his old age, he saw that times had changed very much since he was young and he felt that he had no place in present society. This fact lead him down the road to suicide.
