No matter what motives pushed the new settlers during the early 17th century, they all faced similar hazardous conditions such as disease and malnutrition in this new land. The differences of the two settlements are many. The first original Jamestown settlers had different motives than the New England settlers. Jamestown settlers had a vision of gold, profits, and riches. The Puritans simply wanted to fulfill their ideas of a pure life. Throughout the first years there were numerous setbacks for England‘s first colony, Jamestown. The early settlers of Jamestown were gentlemen, townsmen, people of poverty and adventurers who knew nothing of creating a settlement but only of the possibility of gold. There was a belief that the Jamestown settlers could take advantage of the Indian kindness to obtain more land and resources, but in fact this assumption was part of the demise of some of the settlers.
