Endurance in Les Murray's poetry
...m. Another aspect of endurance in the poem is the endurance of the land, through what seems to be a drought. The man seems to have come to come to the end of his rope as even the simplest of chores are too much effort and there is no point to doing them. This shows just how far the man has sunk, adding to the effect of his endurance. “ The Christmas paddocks aching in the summer heat”, show the land enduring but it is also directly related to the man’s heart aching over his wife. Because this is such a personal subject for Murray it makes the effect of the poem that much stronger. The effect is quite an emotional one in that when reading the poem and knowing it is dealing with a real thing you can relate it to a time when you have also suffered great lose and this adds to the appeal of Murray poem. The poem ‘Inside Ayers Rock’ deals with a false Ayers Rock built in NSW for tourists. The building is very tacky and not very well thought out. Murray makes this fairly clear in his description of the place. Through Murray’s description his enduring the boredom of the place could be a form of endurance. Of course on deeper inspection of the poem and on mention of an Aboriginal standing in the doorway you can see that the main endurance is that of the Aborigines. They have had to endur...
