In this short, witty piece Dickinson addresses two of the main obsessions of her generation: The pursuit of empirical knowledge through science, faith in an all-knowing, all-powerful Christian god and the debate on which was the more powerful belief. It seems to me that without taking any sides, she supports her belief in science and logic more than her belief in “faith”. She does this in a very subtle manner. I also thought that the way she quoted “faith” & italicized “see” and “microscopes” was very significant. She didn’t just put it there; she had a point to make. She put ‘faith” in quotations to describe it as something unreal, something imaginary. She italicized and capitalized microscopes to emphasize its superiority and realism over “faith”. I believe that she is trying to tell the readers that although faith is a very important belief, when it comes to reality such as an emergency of diseases or something like that, faith is not going to get us anywhere. It is the science that guides us through. I agree with her on that part, because we believe in God all we want. But, for example, if a person in our family is suffering from a very chronic disease, we cannot just leave it in God’s hands to save him/her. We do pray for that person, but after all, we turn towards science to save his/her life.
