The vote would be taken by State, each having one vote. Electors usually vote for the candidate of their party, i.e. Republican or Democratic, but they are not required to do so. When Americans vote in a presidential election they are actually voting for electors who will, hopefully, vote for their party’s nominee. By electing a president in this way, candidates can win the most electoral college votes without winning the most popular votes. In the years, 1824 (John Quincy Adams), 1876 (Rutherford Hayes) and 1888 (Benjamin Harrison) won the presidency by winning the most electoral votes, even though their opponents won more popular votes. The electoral college system was established in the U.S. Constitution. Proposals have been made for eliminating the electoral college and allowing the president and vice president to be elected by popular vote. I agree with this proposal.
