Effects of Internet on Society
... 12% - 1 hour or less Females 25% - over 5 hours 21% - over 5 hours 39% - 2-5 hours 31% - 2-5 hours 36% - 1 hours or less 48 % - 1 hour or less You can clearly see that the both genders of the 13-19 group use the internet more extensively through out the week. I believe this can be explained another result I had that showed that teens are online more because the use chats more frequently. Lately we had a boom of chat programs like ICQ, MSN Messenger, AOL Messenger, etc. These programs are used primarily by students to communicate with each other. Also data indicates that the younger group utilizes Internet for research twice as much then the adults do, so this also would explain why that they use the internet more. Also by looking at the data above you can see another major pattern that females tend to use the internet less then males. This I predict would be due purely to the nature of things just as boys like guns and electronic gadgets, similarly I think males are biologically are more attracted to internet because it is a bit more curious for them. A similar pattern appeared by looking at the results of what gender has access to Internet more at work. Males lead with 97% that have access and 45 % of females have access. I agree that there is a bit of error due to a fairly small variety of subjects that took the survey but I would estimate that there would be about 10 % more males that would have more access to the internet then females. Another major trend I have noticed was that the age group of 20 and above shop online more then teenagers. The adult group males and females had 54% and 39 % respectively, while the other group had 34% males and 32% females shop on e-comers. These results of course are due to the fact that adults have more money to spend and a larger percentage of them have credit cards. In reference to my findings and after careful consideration I realized that the conflict perspective of sociology relates very close to my topic. This perspective is all about social change and that is exactly what the “Internet Age” has done. It has created more competition between Internet companies that strive to exercise control with greater powers. Also this perspective looks at the competition between various groups of different age, gender, and racial backgrounds. This is basically what I did here too. I have previously found two studies that relate to mine. One of the studies was done by Dr. T. Matthew Ciolek at the Australian National University in February of 1997. He did a survey as well as I have – looking at what resources of the internet people use the most. His studies proved to be similar to my results. The only pa...
