This disorder also includes methods of binging and purging in order to keep a thin look. However, those suffering from this disorder start to recognize the side effects that can be detrimental to their health. Binging and purging can cause muscle spasms, kidney damage, swollen salivary glands, and heart attack. Some other side effects that have been noticed are sore throats, hair loss, tooth erosion, and dehydration (Coon 386). Causes of Eating Disorders The most known cause of eating disorders is a fear of becoming overweight. Most suffering from eating disorders are adolescent females. Eating disorders are also a need to feel control over one’s body. By starving themselves they feel they are in control of their body because they are maintaining their body weight (Coon 386). Another cause of eating disorders is results of depression (Coon 387). Recognizing Eating Disorders There are a few ways to identify a person suffering from an eating disorder. Those suffering from anorexia are greatly under weight and deny they have a problem. They continue to lose weight and many women find their periods to cease (Coon 386). The symptoms are harder to recognize of those suffering from bulimia. These people tend to have a normal weight but will use exercise and fasting as methods to prevent weight gain. They will also eat excessive amounts of food and then make themselves vomit. This is in hopes to rid the guilty thoughts of having consumed large amounts of food (Coon 386)...
