Throughout the novel Cathy’s character had to take several of evils many personalities. After murdering her parents for punishing her, Cathy changes her name to Catherine, only to change it again to Kate after she shoots Adam and leaves her twin sons at home. In contrast to Cathy’s character, Samuel’s good teachings are seen throughout his entire life in the novel. Even in his death, Samuel is the peaceful Heavenly character that the reader tends to admire. Once again, even though it was through death, good conquers evil. There are two instances in East of Eden where the story of Cain and Abel appears, once in the case of brothers Charles and Adam and again with Cal and Aron. Both sets of names start with the same first letter of the corresponding brothers in the bible that they are being compared to. Charles tries to kill Adam over the issue of winning their fathers love, much like Cain tries to kill Able. Though Charles, much like Cain, has worked harder for it, their father tends to favor Adam. Once grown up, Adam and Cathy have two sons of their own, Cal and Aron. Cal is a hard working and clever young man, while Aron has more appealing features with a light complexion and a kind heart. In each set of brothers the personality and attitude of one contrasts with that of the other.
