...ion. Due to paralysis, she never had the time to make up her mind earlier. Another example of paralysis is written in the story, “The Dead”. The whole story revolved around a group of people whom were all described as being in some form stuck in Dublin. The idea that a whole town is not moving on in life gives a strong message that the people of this time frame were bored, and lazy. Another concept that Joyce uses is gnomon. Gnomon is showing a small part to represent universal. An example of gnomon would be, a constant showing of crime in a city on the news leading someone to believe that the entire city is crime ridden, even if it is only concentrated into a small part of the city. Joyce uses gnomon in almost all of his stories. His universal message is representing Dublin to show how he views the world. In particular, Joyce used gnomon in the story, “An Encounter”. Two, rather sheltered boys decided to ditch school, and embark on adventure in Dublin. They had previously not been able to roam the city because of their social, and educational situation. The person they meet in outer Dublin is presumably insane. He rambles on about theories of how the boys should stay away from women. This man is the only exposure that they have to the outside Dublin society. The man gives a strong lesson in cruelty, and self-realization. Hence, you have gnomon because the man was representing the universal. Furthermore in “The Dead” Gretta is a prime example of gnomon. She never actually felt complete since she lost her one and only true love at a very young age. After this incidence, she never thought possible of another feeling of this manner with another man. The idea of simony is iterated in “Dubliners”. Simony is the exchanging of the spiritual for the material. For example, a prostitute is engaging in simony because she is selling out her sacred body for the sake of getting money. An example of simony in “Dubliners” is in the story, “ The Dead”. Gabriel committed each of the seven deadly sins throughout the story. He committed simony by exchanging his soul for social status and education. He talked down to every person that he encountered at the party. He firmly believed in his superiority. The attitude Gabriel gave off to the people was really false, and at the end of the story it leads to a strong epiphany. An epiphany is a moment of sudden intuitive understanding. In the case of the characters in the book “Dub...
