This would occur again during the Vietnam War revolution of the 1960s and lead a drive away from standardization or militarization of clothing. Women and men’s fashion were similar until the 18th century but gender roles would latter differentiate the image that men and women portray within society. Through gender roles there has been a transition of fashion throughout history that is shown through changing expectations for how women should dress. The art of fashion accommodates cultural belief systems and therefore it is a sub sect of culture. According to Lois Banner and Valerie Steele, fashion in women's dress is characterized by constant small changes in decoration and design, leading slowly to changes in general style and silhouette (1). Fashion is a reflection of the values and beliefs of society. It is within fashion that an expression for individualism or submission can be perceived. The ideal image changes with shifts in thought patterns toward the perception of beauty and/or values of society. The political and religious backgrounds of women help to form the foundation or framework for ideal images. Islamic fundamentalism, Muslim, Catholic and various other religious sects have helped to form the ideal dress for women. Variations of religious group that predominately form the world social fabric for women serve as spiritual battlegrounds that ultimately clashes.
