Driving a 5 speed car
... five-speed car, you always start out in First gear. The car will sputter if you try to start out in a higher gear. If it is in Neutral, you begin by turning on the ignition while putting your right foot on the brake. With your left foot, push the clutch pedal to the floor. Move the gear lever into First gear. This can be tricky for beginners, but have patience. The hardest thing, I believe, is learning how to let the clutch pedal out slowly while giving the car a little bit of gas at the same time. The thing that helped me was imagining one foot going up (clutch) while one foot went down (gas). When you first start out, the car may jerk a bit, but once you master this, your driving will be nice and smooth. When your speed reaches about 10 miles per hour, you will shift to Second gear. To do this, push the clutch pedal to the floor, not giving the car any gas, put the gear shift in the number 2 position, and let up on the clutch slowly. Then you can give the car some gas and let the car go a little faster. Knowing when to shift gears can be tricky, but when you become more proficient, you will be able to determine when to shift by listening to the car. Some people watch the RPM gauge (revolutions per minute that the motor is spinning), and when the RPM's reach a specific number, they know when to shift gears. Some vehicles even have a light that comes on, that is located somewhere on the dashboard, that tells you when to shift to another gear. Initially, you may find that you need to rely on things like this, but once you become more experienced, you probably won't have to. You repeat the shifting process into Third and Fourth gears as your speed increases. If you are travelling on a highway, you can shift into Fifth gear, or overdrive, to get better gas mil...
