Too often students classify other students by the way they dress (Haley 2003). First of all, dress codes are a good idea because they would ensure that students do not wear clothing that is too revealing or offensive. Now, I admit that when a beautiful girl walks late into my first period class and she’s flaunting all she’s got, I don’t mind at the moment. However, when she sits down in front of me and I totally lose focus of what I should be concentrating on, that’s when we have a problem. By keeping students from wearing apparel that is too short, low cut, baggy, or provocative we will also be keeping their classmates more focused on their work. Teachers and administrators in Long Beach believe most students perform better academically because of uniforms, making school more of an academic atmosphere (Cruz 2001). There is a different type of dress for every occasion. We know how to dress if were going to church, or if were going to a club on a Friday night. There are different types of dress for every different environment. School shouldn’t be any different. What needs to be determined in the dress code is, what is school attire, which can be decided by the students and the administration.
