Through the play’s characters we are able to see both the dream and the reality. Despite Master Harold’s bitter and harsh opinion that we live in a world where “life is a perpetual disappointment”, Sam contests, using ballroom dancing as the example. “It’s beautiful because that’s the way we want life to be”, is his explanation for the perfection in the dancing and its participants.
