...now what non-verbal communication is. Non-verbal communication is basically sending and receiving messages in a variety of ways without the use of words. It is both intentional and unintentional. Most speakers and listeners are not conscious of this. As an example, if you have ever been flipped the “bird” you know exactly what I am talking about. Other non-verbal communication methods can include but is not limited to the following: Touch Glance Eye contact Volume Vocal nuance Proximity Gestures Facial expressions Intonation Dress Posture Smell Word choice and syntax Sounds There are two basic categories of non-verbal language: messages produced by the body; messages produced by the broad setting (time, space, silence). Why is non-verbal communication so critical in a business environment? If you cannot see how a person is reacting when you are speaking or listening to them, then the message may be misinterpreted. Non-verbal communication can make or break a business transaction if you can’t see a non-verbal reaction. Why is loyalty so crucial in the business world today? Loyalty is important to both the employer and employee. This commitment by both parties can be limited if there is little or no personal interaction between the two. Relationships with supervisors and employees are important to the success of any business. If your employer does not know you on a personal basis (face to face) then it may be much easier for them to ‘let you go’ if cutbacks must be made. And the same can be said for the employee, if there is a lack of loyalty to the employer, it is much easier for them to take a better offer from another company. Telecommuting is a drawback to the loyalty between employer and employee. This creates a higher turnover rate for the business and a lack of experience in the workplace.
