Down Comes the Rain
...ng of the rain generates a false sense of security. The rain is really indicating that the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy can only be momentary and will be shortly lived. When Nick answers the door when Daisy arrives, he notices that “the exhilarating ripple of her voice was a wild tonic in the rain” (90). With this, it is shown that Daisy coming out is uncommon for such a day and that there might be hope for Daisy and Gatsby. As Gatsby opens the door for Gatsby, Gatsby “was standing in a puddle of water glaring tragically into my eyes. Gatsby if feeling as a future relationship for Daisy and himself is hopeless. “The increasing rain” when Nick answers the door shows that there is little hope for him and Daisy. It also shows that the meeting of Daisy and Gatsby will be awkward and uncomfortable. The stopping of the rain before they go to Gatsby’s house forms a happy mood on outside but is building the feelings of death and despair underneath. The love between Gatsby and Daisy is impeded by the emotions formed by the rain and starts to foretell a gloomy future. The funerals for Gatsby took place in a dreary, “thick drizzle” (182). Only a few guest attending the funerals. The visitors are soaked from the rain and splash through the soggy ground at the funeral. The rain creates a feeling of abandonment throughout the funeral.
