... when he “[hurries]… town ward at rapid pace.” Dimmesdale’s awareness of his surroundings are also changed. As he begins to depart for the town, “the woods seem wilder [and] more uncouth.” The minister conceives new perceptions from his well-known surroundings. He can not distinguish whether the town “looked older nor younger.” He cannot reminisce things that were eminent to him. His elevated senses have changed his views of the world around him and the objects he is most acquainted with, now appear unfamiliar. Dimmesdale’s new impulses try to impart with evil but are controlled by his strong willingness not to indulge. As he strolls through the town, he is “incited to do some strange, wild, [and] wicked thing[s].” Dimmesdale’s new behavior leaves him with a sense that his actions will become “once involuntary and intentional.” These sudden impulses tempt Dimmesdale to convey evil doings. His impulses are also directly towards certain kinds of people. Dimmesdale “refrain from uttering certain blasphemous suggestions,” toward the deacons. His impulses could not make him “avoid laughing,” at a deacon. Dimmesdale’s impulses tempt him to act impolite towards the women of the town. He tries to avoid an encounter with the young maiden, but he drops “a tender germ of evil.” His new urges lures him to act unmerited with the children. He is attracted to teach the children “some very wicked words,” which is unlike his behavior. His new attitudes entice him to do unholy behavior which is not tolerated by the church. Dimmesdale’s actions towards the people make them wonder about his confused mental state. When exiting the forest, Dimmesdale believe that he is “not the man for whom [they] take,” him to be.
