The working conditions of a detective are a bit different as well. Since they are both derived from the law enforcement community they both require the same personality with maybe a few adjustments. To perform the jobs one has to be decisive, and in many instances situations arise where quick and rational judgment must be used. The job requires seriousness and a dependability that go unmatched. They need to be able to communicate with the public and take charge of situations. A control of emotions is critical to keep heads cool and violence to a minimum. Patience is a virtue that needs to be exploited in these jobs. While the trooper would require the need to be quick thinking and mellow headed, the detective needs to practice the art of patience and the ability to communicate with the public to achieve their goals. As it is found they contain much of the same personalities but require a magnification of virtues in certain areas to distinguish the demands of the career. Another area to asses is the requirements of education and the benefits of salary with each position. The trooper is probably the lesser of the two when it comes to education. The required education level is the high school diploma or GED, which pretty much allows anyone to try and get the job. On the other hand the troopers usually have a training class for all the selected officers. Once the officers make it through the other tests they are entered into an academy of sorts. There they are usually detained sometimes up to 22 weeks, given a rigid daily workout, and schooled in the techniques and regulations of becoming a trooper. In a sense they are given their own education on the job. The salary of a trooper is fairly modest. They are required to serve on the force for four years before given a raise. The starting salary is $13.86 an hour, which comes out to about 29,000 a year; with overtime and holidays, it is probably more. The detective in some areas requires higher education. Most of the investigators have achieved a college degree or received several hours of credit. The detective is usually a veteran to the force so they know quite a bit about the job.
