Watt’s design was mush more efficient than Newcomen’s in that it got four times more power from the same amount of coal. The steam engine was used in the textile industry and shortly became important in coal mining. The need for good transportation sparked the development of the railway industry. In 1829, George Stephenson developed the Rocket, which could travel along iron rails at 36 miles (58 km) per hour. During the 1800’s it was Britain who led the way in the railroad building.
