Destruction
...s, house that has survived the bombings. T. does this for fun; he has no hatred for Old Misery. T demonstrates this several times though out the story, first when the gang is told they will not be stealing things, a second time when old misery is locked in the outhouse. This is again demonstrated when T and the gang help Old Misery over the fence. T. does what he does because he wants Old Misery to experience the same loss that he has. Another reason is because Old Misery tries to bribe the gang. One other reason for the vandalism is because the gang feels that the house is an old and beautiful house and T. wants to destroy beauty. T. wants Old Misery to experience the same loss that he did. During the bombings T. loses every thing. While T. was causing Old Misery’s loss he came across Old Misery’s life savings that survived the war. T. said “I kept these for you and me- a celebration” (75). When he said this he was burning the money. T. didn’t want to steal the money he just didn’t want Old Misery to have it. if old misery had the money he would have had more than T. T does not hate Old Misery. Another reason that T. destroys the house is Old Misery tries to bribe the gang. When the gang is bouncing a ball against Old Misery’s fence Old misery gives the gang some candy for what appears to be no reason at all. T. tells that gang that he is trying to bribe them. The gang then gets angry and destroys the house. “We’ll show him we don’t take bribes.” (69) When T. says this he is trying to get the gang to help him wreck the house. He wants the gang to think like he does. T. wants to destroy beauty he has no beauty left in his life. His life was ruined by the w...
