Describe how Jesus was presented as a worker of miracles, giving examples from Luke’s or Mark’s gospel.
...s healing miracle’s importance as it showed the power God has over death, much like the power of God that appears with people with such great faith. When Jesus heals a Roman Officer’s servant, Luke shows us Jesus’ power and his impression of those who had great faith. The Roman Officer had not disconnected himself from Jesus’ works, and believed in Jesus’ power greatly. The Roman Officer also shows a huge concern for his servant but does not feel himself worthy of Jesus’ presence as others may have done with the Roman Officer’s wealth and authority. The Roman Officer displayed his faith by sending his Jewish friends to Jesus to tell him ‘“I do not deserve to have you come into my house, neither do I consider myself worthy to come to you in person” ’. The Roman Officer believed in Jesus’ strength to order his slave to health without being in the slave’s presence, despite (perhaps as far as a Gentile would be concerned) Jesus being a Jew. The faith this Roman Officer has is very important in the healing of his slave. This is because the power of God was shown, as Jesus power to heal comes from God. Luke also includes this healing miracle because it shows that Jesus came for everyone, not anyone of a certain religion, but everyone, as Jesus is the universal saviour who cares for all. A man with a dreaded skin disease is another miracle where Jesus’ great care is shown for all. Here Luke shows Jesus as a person who has complete care and compassion for those cast out from society and who have been rejected by others. As the leper asks Jesus for his help, the leper’s faith in Jesus and Jesus’ power is shown. The leper approaches Jesus and asks ‘“Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean!”’. The leper shows that he believes Jesus has the power to heal his skin disease, but also implies that Jesus may not want to heal him. This is because of the leper has been cast out from society and totally shunned, and therefore began to believe that he is disgusting and not worthy enough to be healed, but still, the leper has great faith. This is partly why Luke includes this miracle in his gospel, but also because Jesus healing leper is doing what no one else would have done, and is performing a completely selfless act full of care. Jesus’ respect for the Jewish law is shown too as he tells the leper to go to be examined by the priest and offer a sacrifice as Moses ordered. This miracle is important as it shows Jesus caring for those who had been labelled unclean, and healing then them. Another miracle story recorded by Luke where Jesus shows his care for the unclean is when Jesus heals a woman with severe bleeding. Luke included this story because it shows Jesus’ concern for an unclean woman. The woman had faith but was frightened to approach Jesus knowingly because of her uncleanness. Because of her fright of approaching Jesus and of admitting it was her who he was healed, Luke shows us Jesus’ importance to those who believed and how someone could have been easily intimidated by Jesus authority and presence. The miracle story also shows Jesus’ power too, as with the touch of his cloak the woman was healed. When this happened, Jesus realised some power had gone out of him and wanted to know who it was he had healed. When the woman came forward, Jesus displayed his care towards her, referring to her as “daughter” and told her to go in peace. This miracle story is important because it shows Jesus caring and healing a woman, who were considered then second class citizens. Simon’s mother in law who was sick is another miracle where a woman is cured. At Simon’s house, those who were there spoke to Jesus about his mother in law being sick with a fever. When Jesus went to her and ordered for the fever to leave her, she was instantly healed. When she was, she began to serve them, grateful for her returned health. Because of the fever leaving the woman instantly; it demonstrates Jesus’ great power. Jesus felt concern and compassion which is why he healed her, showing us Jesus’ sympathy for the sick in his wanting to heal them. Luke included this story because it shows Jesus cared for everyone, despite what other people thought as others being important or unimportant, healing all who came to him. Sick friends is another miracle story where Jesus’ patience, power and care is shown. Many, many people with sick friends and relatives came to see Jesus for them to be healed in this story, and, as Jesus was, he healed all that who were suffering. Though when the evil spirits he ordered out of the sick, Jesus ordered them to silence because they recognised who he was. He wanted the demons to be silenced because Jesus did not want people just to have faith, just to believe in his power and the Kingdom of God because of the healing miracles he performed. Luke shows us though Jesus’ compassion for all, as the universal saviour, healing all thos...
