...d the legislature are elected. There are times that the terms democracy and republic are interchanged, but they are not synonymous. It is true that both of the system have the power to govern to their elected representatives. In a republic, however, the officials are expected to act on their own best judgement of the needs and interests of the country, on the otherhand, the officials in democracy more generally and directly reflect the known or determined views of their citizens, sometimes subordinating their own judgement. RULED BY THE PEOPLE played an important part in the democracies. The democracies of the city-states of ancient Greece and Rome during the early years of the Republic were unlike the democracies of today. They were all direct democracies, in which all citizens could speak and vote in assemblies resembled.
