Demo-Republican idea
...nt E, John Randolph feels that taxation is not a republican idea and it is impolitic. During the Jefferson Administration, many taxes were lifted including the excise tax. Since Demo-Republicans took the constitution word for word, they felt that taxation, or anything thing not written in the constitution for that matter, is wrong for the federal government to impose and felt that anything not in the constitution should be left up to the state governments. The characterization of the Federalists party was that the federal government had implied powers even though it was not written in the constitution. According to document D, Federalists were trying to change many laws so it could benefit them. Since many of the things they proposed were not initially written in the constitution, Federalists felt they had the right to impose this new legislation. Democratic-Republicans were also incorporating Federalists’ ideas and feelings into their own. Federalists felt that they can issue laws that were not written in the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson was a firm believer in the Constitution remaining status quo and untouched but according to document F, he realizes that laws have to change as American society changes. He realized this for many reason especially when he was purchasing the Louisiana Territory. It was not written in the constitution that he cold purchase land from another nation but he found his own loophole and made a treaty with France to purchase the Louisiana Territory. Thomas Jefferson also incorporated some Federalists’ ideas into his own. He kept a federal bank and the assumption of the national debt. During the Madison administration, Federalists ideas were coming up as well. According to document E, Randolph felt that the taxation was not just and not characteristic of the Demo-Republican party.
