Some say that this situation is a psychiatric revolution. Back in the 40’s many critics argued that mental institutions were worse conditions that concentration camps in Germany. This caused a great stir in the public’s eye. The public seems to see the “insane” and likewise to be a sort of band-aid on top of the way the country looked. Thorazine, a drug that was introduced in to the public in the 60’s, which added to the process of dinstitutionalization. This drug was more used to “control” the patients rather than cure them. The simple ingestion of a pill, seemed to be the easy way out, and made it look like there was a simple answer for the mentally ill. Many forms of aid such as welfare made it possible that a mentally ill person could like in the public world, not have to work, and still be a part of the public. Liberal advocates pushed for the rights of the patients, so that they could be a part of the community as well.
