How can death be justified as a means of punishment when the Bible states that it is unlawful? Christians are taught to “turn-the-other cheek”, and to forgive. Imposing the death penalty shows no mercy and no forgiveness. It is taught through Christianity that only God has the power to take life. Man is not God and therefore should not be executing others. Another reason eliminating the death penalty is that the government should not lower itself to the level of a cold-blooded murder. There is an old saying “two wrongs do not make a right. It goes for the death penalty. Murder should not be punished with more murder. “In 1976 there were 415 executions that the government were responsible for. One third of the executions that year were in Texas alone. In 1995 there were forty-five death row executions”. That is a decrease of 920%. Why such a huge decrease. Could it be that those in charge of implementing the death penalty are no longer comfortable with it? This should be indication enough that the death penalty needs to stop. Supporting a criminal on death row is expensive. The cost of supporting a criminal on death row is about $40,000 per year; as compared to only $15,000 per year for those who are not.
