... Charlie’s son, Dave singleman; he especially competes with his brother Ben. Willy doesn’t only compete with Ben, he compares himself to him. He wonders what his life would have been like if he went with Ben when he could have. During the play we learn that Willy had the opportunity to go off with his brother, little to know that Ben would become rich. Ben is in the play to represent success. Willy on the other hand represents everyman, or a normal man. Willy can not understand that he is just a “low man” hence Millers choice to name the family the “lomans.” Not a superhero or star like Ben. Willy thinks that only the people who are “well liked” are loved. All the people who succeed are loved. Ben said “walked into the jungle and came out rich.” Miller wants us to ask ourselves do we value ourselves by the money in our pockets. If someone screws up, do we not love them anymore? Willy was a great salesman, but to who, his family, his friends, his company that dumped him after he went on commission. Willy just will not admit that he is a failure. He wants to be just like his brother Ben. He wants to have all this money and not to worry about a thing. Willy believes if you have money, you are successful, that people like you, and that you are truly loved. Willy also wants to be like Dave Singleman, the 84 year salesman.
