It is not that he is hideous, but he believes that he is; and that no woman could love him for his soul. This quote shows two things about Cyrano: The first is that he will not be insulted without making the offender look like an ignorant dolt, and the second is that he is incredibly brilliant and a gifted poet. Both these things indicate exceptional human qualities. Cyrano de Bergerac is the super-hero of his era. Roxane is a simple, immature character who tries to be an intellectual like her cousin, Cyrano. Roxane says “ In such a man! – he is proud- noble-young-brave-beautiful,” about Christian before she ever talked to him, or to Cyrano acting as Christian. Her reason for believing that Christian was intelligent is that she could see it in his eyes. This shows that Roxane is shallow because she sees Christian and without knowing him, believes he is noble and brave. Roxane proves that she believes that beauty is only skin deep when she says the line, “ And that displeases me as much as if you had grown ugly.” She believes that beauty is the most important factor in a relationship.
