... is rewarded for starting it. The religion started in Mecca, whentha angel Jibrel( Gabriel) read the first revelation to Muhammed in the seventh century. Muhammed was bornin a noble tribe of Mecca in Arabia in 570 a.d. At a young age Muhammed was known as righteous person. At forty he was given prophethood by the angel Gabriel. Twenty-three years later the revelations came and was compiled in the from of a book call the Quran, which Islam consider it to be the final word of God. Although Muhammed plays a big role in the Islam religion they do not worship him or any other prophet. They belive that God alone is to be worshiped, not any other human being. Belivers of Islam are called Muslims, which is a person who submits themeselves to the will of God. They have two main text: the Quaran, which is the book that is believed to be the word of God. In English it is spelled Koran, which is not recommenened because some Muslim find it offensive, and the other is the Hadith, which is a collection of saing of Muhammed. Muslim us it as a guide for living, but not with the same status as the Quran. In the Untied States we would refer to the Hadith as a collection of quotes. Muslim have five major pillars of Islam to follow which are called the articles of faith which are: 1.) To recite at least once during their lifetime the shahada(the creed): "There is no God but God and Muhammas is his prophet." 2.) To perform the salat( prayer) five times a day if possible. This should be recited while the body is toward Mecca. 3.) To donate regularly to charty through zakat(charity). This is a 25% charith tax on the income and property of middle and upper class Muslims. They are also encouraged to make additional donations to the needy as they feel. 4.) To fast during the month of Ramadan. 5.) If economically and physically able to make at least one hajj(pilgrimage) to Mecca.
