...As far as my conscious is concern I never seem to take part in ethnocentrism. I never accept the fact that my culture is better than any other. I personally think that no on should ever think that their culture is better than other. They should in turn try to learn other culture. Being from an Indian background living among other denominations was quite a challenge for me because I had to incorporate my culture with other so that I can “fit-in” so that I wouldn’t be left out. They were times when I had to completely ignore my own culture and values just because I wanted to be part of the crowd. I grew up in Guyana, a small town called ‘Skeldon’ where there is a mixed culture. As a child growing up especially when I was in high school, was quite a challenge for me. Being an Indian and a Muslim together is different from being and Indian and a Hindu. Due to the fact that they is a misconception that Indians are Hindus. When it comes to religious holidays let say “Dewali” known as the festival of light which is a Hindu holiday as well as an Indian culture. In my religion they say that one shouldn’t take part in activities other than their religion. However, if I did take part I had to not make my parents know. If they did then I will be in ‘hot-water’. Besides that a Muslim male is not suppose to get married to any girl that is not Muslim. If however, it happens it will consider to be a misfortune for that couple.
