...siles was because of Cuba’s leader, Fidel Castro. Ever since he had come into office, the United States stopped buying sugar from Cuba and refused to supply them with much needed oil. The United States had missile bases as close as 150 miles from the Soviet Union, so Cuba was a prime spot for them to set up their own bases. A key player that many people have forgotten was Anatoly Dobrynin. His role in the Crisis was a middle-man in-between The President and the Premier. He met with President Kennedy three different times and after they were done, Anatoly would compose a report and send it over to Khrushchev. In the end, his role was crucial because if Khrushchev had not trusted the ambassador, he would not have known how close the world almost came to a nuclear war. During the event, President Kennedy had set up a group of twelve advisors called EX-COMM. He used this group to help him make all of the decisions during the crisis.
