Critique of Psychopharmacological Therapy of Sexual Deviant Sexual Behavior
...lation. These drugs may someday be used to produce a male contraceptive. To test the effectiveness of Cyproterone Acetate, Bancrift (1974) and Cooper (1981), used 200 subjects throughout Europe in their study. They did an in-depth case study of the 200 individuals. This case study was conducted fairly well; it contained a test group, and used a representative sample of the population. In both studies, Cyproterone Acetate was proven to reduce hyper sexuality in males. This drug is relatively safe, and has been proven to be beneficial to treat schizophrenic patients that have sexually motivated illusions and hallucinations. The second major drug that is being studied to prove its affect to control sexual deviants is Medroxyprogesterone Acetate. This drug is very commonly used in the United States, and is more commonly known as the oral form (Provera), and the injected form (Depo-Provera). Medroxyprogesterone Acetate is a very popular female contraceptive in the United States. This study proves that Medroxyprogesterone Acetate is also a good treatment to reduce the testosterone levels in males, acting like an antiandrogen. “Medroxyprogesterone Acetate treatment defused destructive sexual energy leading to a mellowing of temperament and reduction of tension”. Although this drug may seem to be an effective treatment to control sexual deviancy, there is no evidence that it actually does in humans. The relationship between testosterone and sexual deviance in primates is proven, but there is no hard evidence to prove it to be true in humans. Although the next method to control sexual deviancy isn’t a drug, its mental effect on controlling it is very effective. By using shock therapy, the test subjects were swayed away from committing any violent sexual act in the future. One test was done to change the sexual orientation of sexual deviant homosexuals. By using shock therapy, four out of five subjects, had no reoccurrences of homosexual contact. Heterosexual anxiety is also reduced by using shock therapy too. Overall, this study was conducted to find an effective treatment to control the sexual violence that some people possess. In a majority of the cases, much of the sexual criminals appear to be male. Because most of the studies in this area are case studies or correlations, it can not be proven that reducing the testosterone in a male is responsible for reducing sexual deviancy, although it appears to be. Because of the studies involving shock therapy, that shows that not only the level of testosterone is responsible for sexually motivated crimes and inappropriate behavior. By relating the three studies, it can be said that testosterone alone is not responsible for sexually motivated crimes; there must also be a mental reasoning behind it too. The type of study that John B. Murray conducted was a correlation. Although he didn’t actually conduct any studies himself, he used the research from other scientists to come to a correlation between sexual deviancy and antiandrogen drugs. He also used the research gained from the shock therapy to show that although the drugs may be effective, they will not work one hundred percent of the time, due to a persons psychological disorders that motivate people to do sexual motivated crimes. The participants involved in theses studies were not described in detail in this article. In the one case study they used prison inma...
