The next thing we know is Dantes is arrested by Villedefort, the so called prosecutor of the story, who explains to Dantes that he is being arrested for the act of treason for holding a letter explaining the plan to escape Napoleon back to France to regain power. Dantes explains that he was only supposed to be the carrier of the letter and it isn’t addressed to him, and Dantes is almost off the hook until the Prosecutor randomly arrests Dantes after finding out who the letter was addressed to (The audience doesn’t understand until later). Dantes is sent to Chateau D’if, and there he spends 14 years. In the 14 years at Chateau D’if, Dantes learns that the letter was addressed to the prosecutor’s father and therefore the prosecutor blamed and falsely arrested Dantes in order to save his father. Dantes is enraged and with the help of a man he meets in the prison, Dantes escapes 14 years later. Just before both men are to make their escape, the older man dies and reveals that he has a fortune kept at the Isle of Monte Cristo and that Dantes may have it all. This is where Dantes escapes, retrieves a huge amount of money, calls himself the Count of Monte Cristo and plans his revenge. D...
