Corporate Greed, A Christian's Perspective

Every organization has its own goals to contribute to the welfare society. Greed is a temptation that many incorporate with business. The meaning of greed, regarding those who are greedy the Bible says, "He that is greedy of gain troubled his own house…" (Prov. 15: 27). There are people whom the Bible describes as greedy in the commission of sin (Eph. 4: 19). The teaching of the Bible concerning greed, as intimated, greed is inordinate and misdirected ambition and desire. Paul said, "I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel" (Acts 20: 33). Rather than being guilty of covetousness and greed, Paul assisted others (vs. 34). In so doing, he serves as an example (vs. 35). Even preachers can be guilty of greed (I Tim. 6: 5-11). Some are greedy because they believe materialism is the answer. Jesus addressed some greedy people when he said, "Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consistent not in the abundance of the things which he possessed" (Lk. 12: 15). Jesus then described a greedy farmer and the waste that characterized him (vs. 16-21). Greed precludes contentment (Heb. 13: 5). Moreover, greed is the prolific cause of all evil. "The love of money is the root of all evil," penned Paul (I Tim. 6: 10). Anti-business establishments define greed as a business that profits for self-indulgence and not to better society. This is what most anti-business establishments hear of when companies are accused of fraud. However, many do mistake greed and profit. These two have entirely different meanings. Greed is what makes some strive in self-indulgence and decadence, while profit is what a business makes to survive, and is helping the society at the same time. Greed is a temptation that is easily establish in Capitalism. Profit is the income your business makes in order to continue business. However, the world the two go together in the business cycle. Going on to the next question, I do believe that a businessperson can also be a Christian. I have seen many amazing Christians in the workplace. It makes the workplace a more enjoyable place. It is a mistake to associate business with greed, he claims. When people accept the entrepreneurial vocation, they must focus on the needs of others; business people in a market economy cannot be self-centered and be successful. Religious leaders must learn something about economics. Then they will come to understand that the entrepreneurs often are the greatest men and women of faith among us. This is a scripture I keep in mind when I think of business, “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” (I Timothy 6:17-19). I really think this is also a time for Christians to talk about their faith in the work place. It is a time to evangelize.
