Copensation of teachers

...ool environment when subjected to sarcasm and the bad attitudes of the students, and unless they are an exceptional teacher, students show sarcasm and hatred to them. Celebrities seem to have the benefits and lifestyle that youth and others admire and envy. Their salaries are great and they are always in the constant spotlight of the public. At any length they are looked upon as role models and positive icons for America. Celebrities provide entertainment so that society has an outlet for relaxation and enjoyment of the sports and arts. Most are perceived as clean cut, drug free, and their overall appearance is condoned to be "right" and what Americans stand for. The fans aspire to their "positions." Most aspire to their salaries and to the fame or popularity of the individual. Youth look up to celebrities as mentors, and sports icons give a boost of confidence to them while teaching kids to strive to be better athletes. I cannot just be one dimensional with the subject, after all teachers do get some recognition. Teachers are always thought of as very intelligent. They have to finish college before then they can even think of becoming a teacher, when some sports figures resign from college early or don't even go to college at all. Sports stars and celebrities generally are not contenders for a Noble Prize. Teachers and professors are constantly studying, learning, relearning and refining their subject of teaching. With constant work, teachers discover something new for the good of mankind and can receive awards such as the Noble Prize for being smart, intellectually sound and discovering new idea for the benefit of mankind. Even though a celebrity's paycheck is good, the toll of a vivacious lifestyle can be bothersome sometimes as well. Imagine if you were constantly in the spotlight. Everyday people would come up to you and want your autograph or picture. This process of mass media can get very hectic and sometimes deadly. For instance, Princess Diana was the most widely photographed person of all time and that fame apparently caused her death. Some "paparazzi" were following her car and trying to snap pictures of her when her chauffeur tried to "escape" them. The journalists persisted on getting some up close and rare footage of Di and sped up as well. Both cars were going too fast when princess Di's car veered out of control and hit the sidewall of a tunnel and killed her instantly. The photographers got some nice photo's but became too overwhelmed and caused a casualty (Fowler 3). There is one example of "the price of high society." The money paid to celebrities and a sports figure is considerable. Here are some examples: A. Oprah Winfrey received $98 million for being a talk show host in 1998. She remains the highest paid talk show host in the world; B. Jim Carrey earned $ 12 million for "Dumb and Dumber" in 1995 and $ 20 million each for "The Cable Guy" in 1996, " Liar, Liar" in 1997 and his Oscar nominated performance in " The Truman Show" in 1998. C. David Duval lead the PGA money list in 1998 by earning $2,591,031. Tiger Woods was fourth on the money list with $1,841,117 in 1998. He was first on the money list in 1997 with $2,066,833 (Fowler 7). In 1997 Tiger Woods signed many endorsements totaling more than $ 110 million which included Wheaties, Nike, Titleist, MasterCard, and Seiko. Tiger Woods can earn more in a year of playing golf than teachers will ever make in their lifetime. D. NBA (National Basketball Association) players remain the highest paid athletes in the world with the minimum players' salary of about one million dollars per year. One of the highest salaries in the NBA is 16.5 million dollars per year for five year contract for Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz. Four hundred NBA athletes earn a minimum salary of $ 900,000 a year. There are 30 teams in the NBA, and for each team their salary cap is $ 31 Million Dollars for their players (Thompson 4). In all of the examples above, the people are practicing professions which they very much enjoy. Indeed one can argue, that they would be enjoying their profession even without the huge sums of money they receive. In my opinion the NBA players were very selfish for going on strike and asking for more money. I felt they already had enough money and didn't need much more. This just sends out a message to all their fans that they are very childlike and proved to kids or their role models that it's all right to quit, bicker and whine until you get what you want. By doing this they lost a lot of fans and the league in no longer the same professional organization. The players season was cut short by four months, because they were bickering about more money. They should play the love of the game and not at all for the money. This teaches society to be greedy and go for whatever you can get from the owners without regard for the fans. In my opinion, teachers that grace our presence daily, who give us homework every night, who test us cons...
