These conflicts date back as far as the 15th century, when Protestant and Catholic Kings such as King Henry III and James I fought for power. The tension between the two has been in fact so great that in 1920, Ireland was split in two. The southern side of Ireland separated and was of Catholic religion. The northern side of Ireland, and it’s remaining six countries, were of Protestant Religion. Then for further separation, in 1949 the southern half, or Catholic, side of Ireland broke off from the United Kingdoms completely and became the Republic of Ireland. The Protestant side of the area and the remaining six countries remained with the UK.
