comparison of two german songs
...instruments in this piece are very typical Anglo-Saxon with the drum kit, electric guitar, bass, singer/s and harmonies in the chorus. The lyrics are very repetitive and the verses tell the main story that leads to the chorus. The song has a common structure which is just Chorus then Verse (repeated) The second song I have chosen is the ballad "In den Kasernen” it sounds very touching and sadly sweet in German. It is an old German folk song. It, unlike the other song carries a deeper meaning. The song talks of the soldiers in the Barracks where they are forced to train and fight in the war. They dream of girls that they had to leave behind. They have to fire upon their fellow men, fight the war. At the end of the song it talks of the crosses of all the dead, lives that have been lost due to the war. This song is very different to the first because of this deep meaning. It isn’t a song to be lightly taken because it speaks honest truths of a sad period in time. It has a traditional feel to it in all aspects. The instruments are very different to the common guitar and drums of the first song. The song uses Timpani’s, trumpets, a mandolin/ banjo, violins etc. These instruments further emphasize the origin of the song. The subtle minors separate it from the first song because it is taken more seriously. It uses a more traditional structure that is culturally and contextually accepted for that time period and the location (being Germany).
