The makeup of the British Army today is very similar to that of ancient Rome. Their Army consists of Infantry (still foot soldiers), Cavalry (now mounted in armored tanks rather than on horseback), Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, and Royal Signal. The tactics used today by the British Army are very similar to those of ancient Rome. The British Army has participated in WWI, WWII, and is currently holding a major role of ground and air forces in Operation Iraqi Freedom. FARMING AND AGRICULTURE There are vast differences in the techniques used for farming between the two empires. Mainly because of the modernization and technological advances that have been made here today. The Romans relied mainly on trade. They produced cereal, fruits, and vegetables. Their livestock was limited to sheep, pigs, and goats. On the other hand, the British Empire’s agriculture is very intensive and highly productive. “Due to the innovations in farm machinery, and the biological engineering of seeds, plants, and the increased use of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, the agricultural labor has become more productive.” (Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2002) Over half of the full-time farms in the British Empire are based on livestock. The raising of cattle for dairy products or beef, and the raising of sheep for the use of its wool and also for their meat. RELIGION Religion in ancient Rome was rather confusing. They had a religion of their own. Their religion was not based on a central belief, rather it was based on the belief of multiple gods. Most forms of their religions required some form of sacrifice whether it is an animal or human. Religion in the British Empire is now similar to that here in the United States.
