The Federalists is considered a brilliant set of essays on political theory, and the U.S. Supreme Court has, in controversial cases, often referred to them for incisive and authoritative interpretations of the Constitution. Opponents of the Constitution, or the Anti- Federalists, were locals that feared a strong national government that would be run by educated and wealthy cosmopolitans. They were particularly distrustful of a Constitution that lacked a bill of rights protecting citizens from government attacks on their liberties. The Anti- Federalists operated far away from most citizens. The Anti-Federalist party met in Philadelphia in 1787.
