Comparison of Autism and Asperger's Disease.
...f to harmful action like biting his own wrist or banging his head on a wall. The child often becomes upset at the slightest change to his environment. Language development is difficult and in some cases may not exist or may be limited to very few words. Autistic children may say things like “you want a drink” but really mean “I want a drink” or may repeat words or phrases over and over. Over 75% of Autistic children are classified with Mental Retardation, scoring well below average on IQ tests. Autistics may show varying skill levels on these tests, normally scoring higher on visual-spatial testing than on tests of verbal skills. Some children and adults with Autism who score higher than average are thought to have high-functioning Autism. These individuals may have extra- ordinary abilities like being able to memorize long lists of information, making calculations incredibly fast or great artistic ability. These individuals are know as Autistic Savants. Some consider Asperger’s Syndrome a form of high level Autism but I will get into that subject later on in the report. Studies show a decreased blood flow to certain areas of the brain and a reduced number of brain cells. Scientists also believe that there is a genetic mutation that is directly related to Autism and that family studies show more likelihood to have two children with Autism if the first is born with the disorder. Some cases have been linked to exposure to rubella while developing in the womb and a lack of oxygen during birth. There is no cure for Autism but there are treatments to reduce the symptoms and help the individual to function better. There is controversy over the effectiveness of these treatments because some of the benefits tapered off after a period of time. Scientists use behavioral modification, medication, vitamin and mineral supplements, auditory training and visual training. All have beneficial attributes in different cases but the disorder is so different in every case that it can take a ...
