...arted to upgrade and replace office equipment and software therefore investments in information and communication technologies grew. It was due to this that the gross domestic product went up and Canada could now compete with its counterpart the United States. This was not the case at first. Before the 1995 growth period, Canada lagged behind the United States due to slow pick up of ICT's. The United States rate of productivity was slightly faster because of its technology uptake, which sources suspect to be true in most cases. Two specific ICT's are the Internet and telephones. Now both are very important to the Canadian economy and economies in general because they both bring in money and they can both help advertise or sell products, which in turn bring in money. The Internet "Interest in productivity issues has also risen in recent years owing to expectations that increased use of information and communication technology (ICT) will boost productivity growth in many sectors of the economy (Crawford, Allen)." Businesses have made use of the Internet in offices and the workplace. Not only does it allow individuals to keep in touch but also it does it faster than other methods. This helps to increase work productivity. In the commerce industry, it makes everything easier, from something simple like sending a resume or to something like starting ones own home business. This in turn helps the Canadian economy as well as the economy in general. The Internet also plays a very important role in Canadian culture as well around the globe. As mentioned before it has revolutionized the way society communicates, works and even in some cases carry out their lives day to day and with its easy use and multi-functions. Therefore, the Internet has become one of the most developed technologies. Directly related to the economy and incomes as well as age and social trends, the Internet's acceptance was a quick one. Studies have shown that the number of households with Internet connections is relevant to the total income and its inhabitants. Due to differences amongst annual incomes its been documented that there are more households that own computers than those that have Internet access (Sciadas, G.). Another issue that might play a role in this is the age subject. The Internet most commonly used amongst the younger generation for the purpose of communication but more frequent, for their schoolwork. This does not mean that it is not an important contributor to the economy and the world of communication; in fact, the Internet is probably the most important means of information and communication. The Telephone The telephone is also an important aspect of Canadian lives as well as those around the globe. Its inventor, Alexander Graham Bell made some of his important discoveries on sound vibration while on vacation in Ontario, Canada. The moment in time in which the ICT first makes an appearance to the general public is a key factor in its success or failures. The telephone, in its fundamental form, has been around for nearly one hundred years. Most other information and communication technologies have been around for a significantly less amount of time and had a quicker reaction time. Therefore, what makes the phone so unique and what is the point of looking at it? Statistics show that the telephone is the second highest used ICT when looking at household annual income, just falling short of the television. Recently, in 2002, Canada developed a relationship with Swe-Dish Satellite Systems AB and Ericsson to develop mobile base station for satellite telephony in the GSM network. With this technology, we w...
