Although, the daughters have been raised in a Chinese environment, but they still tend to think and act American, causing a barrier to understanding their own Chinese heritage. Each daughter has all recalled an event, and has taken a lifetime in trying to understand their own mothers but never getting it right; never knowing that all their mothers want for them, is for them to live their life in happiness, to be strong and to know who they are. But the differences between the mothers’ miserable backgrounds and the daughters’ who have lived safe and comfortable helped them in the lack of understanding between them. After reading this novel, it gave me a thought of wanting to know about my parents’ pasts. And try to learn from the past events, and deal with similar problems in our future days lives as growing as individuals.
