...son to sight land. Finally on October 12, 1492 a crewmember of the Pina sighted what is present-day Bahamas. Chris called this land San Salvador while thinking it was Asia. He didn't find any riches or such so he sailed toward China, and landed in Cuba. Everywhere he went he called people Indians thinking that they were inhabitants of the Indies. On November 21, 1492 the captain of the Pinta sailed away to explore on his own. On Christmas Day the Santa Maria ran aground and was unable to sail. Due to the limited space on the Nina, Chris had to leave behind 40 men who built the fort, Navidad. On January 4, 1493 Chris left for Spain, when he arrived in Palos on March 15, 1493 he was greeted as a hero. Later Chris made another trip to the west. On this trip he took 17 ships and 12,000 men of many different professions. Some where sailors, others soldiers, colonists, priests, officials, and gentlemen of the court. He also took some animals such as horses. He left the port of C diz, Spain, on September 25, 1493. Chris rode on a ship called the Mariagalante, his flagship. The reason for this trip to the west was to establish colonies in the new found land. He also wanted to check on the crew that he left behind, and to find great riches. On November 3 his fleet sighted land that Chris believed to be the islands off of Japan. The islands were actually what are now Dominica, Guadeloupe, and Jamaica. Here gold and riches where nowhere to be found. On November 27 Chris reached Hispaniola, where he left his crew. He found that his crew's base had been destroyed, by Indians that the crew had been mistreating. Here Chris established the first colony of Santo Domingo and became the governor of the island. The Indians that gave them trouble were soon destroyed in a battle in 1495. After this rumors reaches the King and Queen that Chris ruled with brutality, so he left his two brothers in charge of the colony and set sail for Spain and March 10, 1496. He arrived in Cadiz on July 31 and got ready to meet with the King and Queen. When he met with them they still supported him despite the bad reports. On May 30, 1498 Chris got sponsored to make yet another trip. This time he took 6 ships and headed to make a stop at the Canary Islands. Here he split the ships into two groups. Three headed for Hispaniola and the other three with Chris headed took a southern route. On July 31 while he was searching for China, he discovered the islands of Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, and Margarita. He thought to have found yet another island but instead it was the mainland of the South American continent. Chris then headed to Hispaniola where he discovered that the were short of food and growing rebellious. In 1500 the alarmed monarchs sent investigators to report on the situation. Chris was then arrested and sent back to Spain. He was able to get off without any punishment. Chris then made a fourth trip to the west wanting to re-establish a good name and find riches in the new land. He left Cadiz on May 9, 1502 with four ships and 150 men.
