The letters were her way of keeping her sanity in an abusive world, where only a few others cared to pay attention to her. The mid-point of the movie comes after Celie's husband takes home the woman he has been crazy about for years - a feeble, alcoholic juke-box singer named Shug Avery, who has been destroyed by life but has managed to sustain everlasting beauty. When Shug originally sees Celie her words are, "You are as ugly as sin." Later Shug moves into the house and Celie obediently provide to her husband's lover. Shug starts to see the beauty in Celie. Shug begins to see Celie as a person and a woman. Shug stands up for her against Albert, which she wasn’t ever able to do by herself. Celie sees Shug as a wonderful woman that she could never be. Shug shows Celie to find her intelligence, voice, ability to exists by relying on herself, and finally how to love. The relationship between Shug and Celie becomesvery deep. Both of them help and need each in order to become what they want to be. This can be seen a few times during the movie, first in the bath tub and then when the two of them are sitting on the bed. In reality Celie freed Shug from the role that everybody wanted her to be, and Shug freed Celie from the psychological bonds that were keeping her from making her own life, by being a mixture of friend, idol, lover, and teacher.
