General Oglethorpe led his men into St. Augustine and although they were not able to obtain a victory there, when the Spanish sailed into Georgia seeking retaliation two years later, he and his soldiers were able to drive the Spanish back to Florida for, what turned out to be, the last time. First governor was John Adam Trotter.Founded in 1733 Georgia was one of the few Spanish colonies along the Florida’s Coast. Originally it was a part of the Carolina Grant. King George II granted Georgia to English general James Edward Oglethorpe. Officially Georgia had two purposes: 1. Bank debtors to live and begin to produce enough wealth to settle their depts. 2. Georgia was going to serve as a buffer zone between English and the Spanish.
