Kennedy, the U.S. president at the time, declared a blockade on Cuba because he thought the missiles were a threat on the U.S. The United States got ready in Florida to invade Cuba, but many people thought this would start a nuclear war. Khrushchev and Kennedy both made an agreement that Soviets would stop sending missiles to Cuba and dismantle any other missiles already there, and the U.S. would promise not to invade Cuba and they would remove their missiles from Turkey. As a result, the Cuban Missile Crisis benefited the Soviet Union. After the U.S. blockade on Cuba, Cuba depended on Soviet support. The Soviets were successful in spreading communism to Cuba. Fidel Castro, leader of Cuba, supported communism in order to get the support from the Soviet Union. Not only did the Soviets achieve their goal in spreading communism, they were able to receive help from the Cubans when needed. The Korean War is an example of an indirect conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Korean War began when North Korea passed the 38th parallel, the line that separates North Korea from South Korea, and made a surprise attack South Korea. President Truman declared the U.S. on the side of South Korea. Truman was using the policy of containment to keep North Korea from spreading communism in South Korea. General Douglas Macarthur led 15 nations not including the Soviet Union to help South Korea. The North Koreans continued to advance in South Korea but Macarthur surprise attacked North Korea and the United Nations pushed North Korea out of Korea and into China. China felt threatened so they drove them back South. After three years of fighting North Korea and South Korea signed a cease-fire agreement, and the border between the two Koreas nearly stayed the same.
