He became excited over the new ideas she had and the changes they were bringing back to Cold Sassy. Everything he did with Miss Love made him feel young. It made him happy to get her new things and while he may not have shown it, he felt it. Also, Grandpa brought the automobile back, when he drove it he felt young and alive again. The automobile brought modernization to the town; a car dealership evolved and the people changed the name of the town to make it seem more evolved. Will also did many things that made him grow older and mature. He progresses throughout the novel during certain events. Will took on responsibility when he helped Grandpa with the funeral. He also grows older watching his grandmother become sicker and sicker and die. He learned about loss and death of a loved one. Another event that changed Will is when his uncle, Camp, committed suicide. When grandpa died, at the funeral he witnessed a black man preach and saw how prejudiced people can be in a small town. He learned that telling personal, mean stories about people won’t always make you feel better, but guilty and sad. This was shown when he told the story about his aunt to his friends when he was camping. Will learned how fragile life can be after his close escape with death when the train ran over him.
