Cloning and its Repercussions on Society
...e clones, living a very short life of nothing but pain and suffering. Thus, cloning people would be a very unethical thing to do. Next, cloning everyone will have a very large effect on the diversity of human beings as a species, and on our ability to procreate and evolve. With no diversity, we would lose what it means to be human, and with no evolution, we would be unable to adapt. Evolution in humans has slowed down considerably, and adding cloning would stop it completely, when in fact, we need to evolve just like everything else on the planet, and if we stop adapting, then we won’t be able to keep up with our changing environment and we may die as a species. Another thing to add to that is that any genetic problems which the donor had will be multiplied and amplified over each time a copy is made, like a recording on a cassette getting worse every time you tape over it. If we continue to clone ourselves, not only will evolution have stopped, but in a way, it will have gone backward, because all of these problems will have been amplified. On a final ethical note, with the ability to clone people comes the want to create castes. People will want to clone people for specific jobs. They will clone a bunch of Einsteins to be physicists, a bunch of Michael Jordans to be basketball players, a bunch of Picassos to become artists, and so on. If this were to happen, people would have no choice of career growing up. They would be bred for certain purposes and would have to do what they were designed to do, instead of being able to choose for themselves. This is very wrong, as people should be able to choose what they want to do with their own future, and it is infringing on their rights to force them into a career because they were designed to take that career. Now, I personally believe that not only is it wrong to clone people, but that we shouldn’t even be cloning animals, or even researching the techniques to do so. The reasons for this is that research in the cloning of animals can lead to the cloning of humans. Even having the knowledge of how to clone humans is a bad thing, because once we know how, we can’t put that back, and if the information falls into the wrong hands, it could have disastrous repercussions. It would be best to stop all research in the area of cloning so that there is no information for those people to get ahold of, and thus, nothing can go wrong. On the other hand, I do believe that we should continue with stem-cell and genetic research. These things can be very helpful to society, and are very unlikely to lead in the direction of cloning. Some people, however, feel differently about these things, and think that they shouldn’t be done as well, but I believe that to be a bit too extreme. The reason that some people feel strongly against stem cell research is that many of the cells used in research come from aborted embryos. However, a lot of stem-ce...
