Claudius As A Smiling Damned Villain
...time in the same scene Claudius calls him his son. Hamlet shows his hatred by then saying to himself “A little more than kin, and less than kind.”(act I, scene 2, line 65). Claudius asks Hamlet “ how is it that the clouds still hang on you?” (actI, scene 2, line 66). Claudius can’t understand why Hamlet is still upset over his father’s death. It seems as if he wants everyone to forget about the death and just to move on as soon as possibleso that no one will start to ask questions and then he would be put in the hot seat. Claudius over-concerns himself with things. Claudius says “O, speak of that! That do I long to hear.” (act II, scene 2 , line 50). He wants to look like a caring man and that even if someone began to suspect him of anything they would immediately disregard the thought because he is such a loving man. Claudius says to Polonius: “Thou still hast been the father of good news.” (act II, scene 2, line 42). He is saying that Polonius has always given him good news and he is thankful for it because he loves to hear good news. Hamlet invites his mother and Claudius to a play in act III, scene 2 and Claudius jumps at the chance to attend it. When Claudius sees the play he seems to be more than a little disturbed by it. The player King is murdered by having poison poured into his ear which is exactly the same way that Hamlet’s father’s ghost told Hamlet he was killed by Claudius. When Claudius sees this act being reenacted right before his eyes on stage he yells out “Give me some light. Away!” (act III, scene 2, line 251). He wants the play to stop and he runs out of the building because he can’t stand the thought of someone knowing about what he did to his own brother and there it wasbeing played out in front of everyone who he had to impress.
